My Process for Oils by Marie

For Palette and Paint and also Paint Party Friday today I want to show what I am working on (the finished painting will be shown next Friday) and I have taken photos of my process as I went through each sitting to paint.  I find it interesting to see other artists' methods and thought this might be fun to do!  This painting is a combination of several different photos (some mine and some not, as I have not ever had a sighting of a mountain lion myself...though they do live here in Central Oregon, and my husband heard some screams one night outside our house)....

First I do a rough outline of what I wish to paint
I then start on the background...the leaves were painted largely individually, using different shades of green, but then with some blending.

More work on the background and I begin to also work on the middle ground....mainly because I got REALLY tired of painting leaves! :-)

Finishing the background and most of the middle ground, I started on my two lion cubs and then mama cat!  Next week you will see the finished painting!

  1. Wonderful to see your technique, Marie. Your painting is going to be beautiful. I saw a mountain lion on my woodpile late one night, years ago, when my dogs woke me up barking. I had stepped out onto the front porch to see what the commotion was all about and didn't see it at first as I scratched the dogs behind the ears. Then they started barking again and I looked......not more than 30 feet away an enormous lion was staring at me. She was at least 9 ft. long from nose to tail. Part of me left the scene and went inside before the rest of me and the dogs could follow. You have never been stared at in quite the same way as you are by a mountain lion. It sends shivers up my spine to this day!

  2. I can not wait to see the finished painting. I am surprised at your subject, mainly because I know you are such a painter who loves flowers and fields etc. So, this is a learning curve for you and is going to be such fun to see.
